Our story

We’ve been supporting families who have experienced domestic abuse and crisis situations since 1973. Centre 56 was the first refuge outside London, and we’ve supported thousands of women and children to escape violence. We’re no longer a refuge but we do offer a wide range of services to families in crisis.

What parents say about us

“After six years of mental and physical abuse, I left my husband, taking my two-week-old and four-year-old children with me. The refuge I went to told me about Centre 56. We had nothing – no shoes, no clothes… Centre 56 gave us everything.”
“There were days I wouldn’t eat so my son would have enough. I wouldn’t turn on the heating so I could make sure there was enough electricity for my son to have a shower. As soon as Centre 56 heard about my situation, my life changed. We had food on the table and gas and electricity in the house.”
“I gave birth during lockdown 2020. There were no midwife or health worker visits. Centre 56 called often to make sure I was ok. When I told them I only had £1 left on my electricity meter, they gave me a gas and electric voucher and food, nappies, baby milk and sanitary products.”
