The Silent Solution system is overseen by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and enables a 999 caller who is unable to make a noise or speak, to press 55 when prompted to inform police they are in a genuine emergency.
If you need urgent police help but cannot speak, you should:
📞 Dial 999
When the operator answers:
- Listen to the questions from the operator.
- Cough, tap your phone, or make any noise if you can.
- A recorded message will instruct callers who can’t talk to press 55.
- Press 55 to let the operator know it’s a genuine emergency and you’ll be put through to police.
⚠️ If you stay silent and don’t press 55, your call will be ended.
If you’re a victim of domestic abuse, or know someone who is, we’re here to help and support you in any way possible, a member of staff will always be happy to help:
