The Silent Solution system is overseen by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and enables a 999 caller who is unable to make a noise or speak, to press 55 when prompted to inform police they are in a genuine emergency.

If you need urgent police help but cannot speak, you should:

📞 Dial 999

When the operator answers:

  • Listen to the questions from the operator.
  • Cough, tap your phone, or make any noise if you can.
  • A recorded message will instruct callers who can’t talk to press 55
  • Press 55 to let the operator know it’s a genuine emergency and you’ll be put through to police.

⚠️ If you stay silent and don’t press 55, your call will be ended.

If you’re a victim of domestic abuse, or know someone who is, we’re here to help and support you in any way possible, a member of staff will always be happy to help:

If there’s an emergency that’s ongoing or life is in danger, call 999 as soon as it is safe to do so. If you can’t speak and are calling on a mobile press 55 to have your call transferred to the police.

For non-emergency situations you can also call the free National Domestic Abuse Helpline 0808 2000 247 (24/7).

You are not alone.
